Who we are:,
The Sons of the American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within The American Legion. The S.A.L. is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the military and were eligible for Legion membership. Together, members of The American legion, The American Legion Auxiliary and The Sons of The American Legion, comprise the Legion Family, Committed to preserving American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation's children, caring for veterans and their families and teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship. The organization follows a line from National to Detachment (State) to County to Squadrons. The work of S.A.L. Squadrons closely follows the programs of the Legion Posts with which they are affiliated. In Morris County, there are 17 Squadrons, representing approximately 1,100 members.
What we do:
Sons support The American Legion in a wide variety of activities, such as Veterans programs, VA home and hospital volunteerism, children/youth projects, community service and observances and Post activities and fund-raisers. In the past 10 years, Sons have raised more than a million dollars for the American Legion Child Foundation. In addition to the massive amounts of time volunteered to VA hospitals, the S.A.L., nationally, has raised $2.5 million for TVs, radios, medical equipment and clothing/care items for patients.
How we grow:
Just as each Legion Post determines the extent of its community service, each S.A.L. Squadron is permitted flexibility in planning programs and activities to meet its own circumstances and objectives. The S.A.L. has study programs recommended for younger members. One such program, "Ten Ideals", teaches the elements of patriotism, health, knowledge, training, honor, faith, helpfulness, courtesy, reverence and comradeship. It is a prerequisite to an advanced program called "The Five-Point Program of Service" which focuses on patriotism, citizenship, discipline, leadership and Legionism.
