The Legion’s Children and Youth Program has three primary objectives: 1) To strengthen the family unit, 2) to maintain well-rounded youth programs and 3) to support other organizations that serve children and youth.
McGruff Safe Kids Program
A nationwide child safety program that features distribution of a child ID booklet, personal safety education and direct community involvement.
Child Health
The Legion’s alliance with the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) underscores its mission and reputation as a caretaker of America’s future; its children. CMN affiliated hospitals provide quality health care to all children, regardless of condition or ability to pay.
Teenage Suicide Prevention
Teen suicides are a growing concern to communities throughout the nation. The American Legion actively supports programs of prevention and awareness and has published a brochure titled “Warning Signs: Suicide Prevention.”
Assistance and Welfare
Since 1925, the Legion has provided cash assistance for needy children of qualified veterans. The Child Welfare Foundation of The American Legion is unique in that all contributions are awarded as grants to non-profit organizations for projects to assist needy children.
Morris County Veterans Foundation
With a growing number of reservists entering active duty, the impact on family finances can create hardship. The Veterans Foundation, funded by Post and private donations, provides financial assistance where possible.
National Emergency Fund
The American Legion is actively involved in meeting the needs of both communities and individual Legion families in the wake of natural disasters.
Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation
The Legion is an organization of veterans serving other veterans and their families. It was instrumental in creating the Department of Veteran Affairs (formerly the Veterans Administration), the G.I. Bill of Rights, and is constantly at work to protect and preserve the rights and benefits of veterans.
From monitoring VA medical centers, to legislative reports and lobbying, the Legion works to insure that veterans receive the quality of medical care, rehabilitation and other benefits that they earned through service to their nation.
The work of the Legion, from community Posts to the National Organization is far too broad to capture here. In Morris County, we see it as visits and activities for patients at Lyons and Greystone, blood drives, student aid and development, law enforcement recognition programs, junior law and ROTC programs, sports sponsorship, Scouting, community involvement, fellowship activities, patriotic ceremonies and observances and so much more.
